The Amazing Rise of Groupon

MBA students often learn about the business of entrepreneurship, but the best way to learn about the spirit of entrepreneurship is by studying real-life examples. One such example is that of Groupon, a deal-of-the-day Web site targeted to specific geographic markets. From a little known start-up company to one that has rejected $6 billion buy-out offers, Groupon seems to have become the bookmark of millions of users overnight. It’s amazing how much a good idea (and the right marketing) can get you, something MBA students know all too well. Given the fact that good ideas are quickly contagious, Groupon is not alone in the business of collective buying power and there are hundreds of copy cats popping up. This can make MBA students very aware that even though a professional may have an original business idea, they must work hard to continue to be the best at selling that idea.
