Chaminade University, which was founded in 1955, is a private, not-for-profit university and is the only Catholic university in Hawaii. It strives to provide students with professional, intellectual, and spiritual growth through academic excellence; professional preparation; close involvement with professors and classmates; opportunities to contribute to society while still in school; and multicultural awareness and understanding. It offers 30 campus-based associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degree programs, as well as 14 evening, weekend, and online degree programs in fields including Hawaiian studies, biology, criminal justice, communication, education, international trade, nursing, and religious studies. It serves more than 2,800 students, primarily undergraduate, on campus.

Accreditation

Chaminade University’s business programs are accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education (IACBE), which accredits business programs that lead to degrees at the associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral levels in institutions of higher education worldwide that grant bachelor’s and/or graduate degrees.

Chaminade University is regionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. The WASC is responsible for accrediting colleges and universities in California, Hawaii, Guam, and the Pacific Basin. The WASC is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Commission for Higher Learning Accreditation as a qualified source for the evaluation of educational standards of institutions of higher learning in the United States. Hawai’i Pacific is also a member of the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Academics

Chaminade University offers an online MBA program as part of its graduate school. While its online MBA does not offer specializations at this time, its campus-based programs offer specializations in accounting, not-for-profit, and public sector business. The online MBA is structured to allow students four elective courses, which include governmental accounting, public and not-for-profit finance, entrepreneurship, business law, labor relations, negotiation and conflict resolution, services marketing, social enterprise management, investment management, philanthropy, taxation, and information technology. Not all elective courses are offered online every semester, but students are free to choose from ones that are in order to customize their education based on their interests and goals.

The MBA program at Chaminade consists of eight core courses and four elective courses. The core courses are Economic Analysis for Managers; Managerial Ethics and Decision Making; Managerial Accounting; Managerial Finance; Managerial Marketing; Human Resource Management; Leading People in Organizations; and Strategic Management.

Students in Chaminade’s online MBA program may complete the program entirely online, but are invited to attend campus-based lectures and activities at any time. The program is designed for students who live off-island, elsewhere in the U.S., or are in the military. Students may log-in to their courses at any time and participate in asynchronous discussions and complete their assignments. Chaminade’s virtual learning system includes 24-7 online support for students, and professors are always only an email, live chat, or phone call away.

The base program cost for the MBA program at Chaminade University is $25,776. Included in the cost is tuition of $685 per credit hour, plus an online fee of $93 per course. Why Chaminade University?

According to U.S. News & World Report, Chaminade ranks among the top regional universities in the west. As a small, private, Catholic college, students can get an entirely different experience at Chaminade than they can get elsewhere. Classes are likely to be smaller, and taught with a Christian worldview. As the only Catholic university in Hawaii, it is in a unique position to offer students a degree rooted in the Catholic faith that still maintains recognized standards of high quality.

Chaminade’s location also offers a diversity that many other U.S. universities can’t: its student body is 33% Asian, 21% mixed-race, 17% white, 14% Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander, 6% Hispanic, 3% black, 3% non-resident foreigner, .3% Native American, and 3% unknown. Having that kind of diversity in a classroom – even a virtual one – can be beneficial to students by allowing them to cross cultural boundaries, work with those who are different from them, and learn to think from perspectives that aren’t their own.

Chaminade’s online courses are taught by the same professors who teach on campus, meaning its online students receive the same high-quality education. The program was designed to require students to have a solid foundation in many key areas of business, such as accounting, marketing, and human resources, but also to allow them to choose areas of focus that meet their needs based on interest, goals, and timing. Students can choose from a variety of electives to make their online MBA exactly what they want it to be.
