East Carolina University offers a general MBA that is completely online— there is no on-campus or residencies required.ECU, which is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), started its online program offering with prep-style classes. In 2001, the college moved to seven first-year course offerings online. ECU’s MBA program was fully online by 2004.
Today, ECU has 800 enrolled online MBA students. The program size doubled in five years, between 2004 to 2009, from 400 to 800 students.
East Carolina University’s business school is accredited by the AACSB, a distinction given to only approximately 5 percent of the world’s business schools.
U.S. News & World Report recently ranked East Carolina University 26th in student engagement and accreditation, 17th in student services and technology and 28th in admissions selectivity.
U.S. News creates its rankings based on the responses from an online survey distributed to 960 regionally accredited colleges and universities.
The ECU MBA does not require prospective students to have business undergraduate degrees and offers online prerequisite classes. There’s also a “pre-term experience” requirement that introduces students to not only online learning technologies but also what the MBA degree program entails.
The typical online MBA student at ECU takes two years to complete the program, taking two courses per semester and one over the summer term.
Students can set their own schedule—from one to five classes per 15-week semester—and work with an adviser to create a class mix that suits and challenges them. Students are required to take 60 credit hours to complete their MBA.
Every MBA class is offered each semester, which allows students to balance “soft” courses with more analytical ones. This feature is also useful for students who need to take a semester off.
In the ECU program, students are required to take proctored exams. ECU has 1,000 proctor relationships with educational sites such as community colleges, Sylvan Learning Centers and universities. If a proctor relationship hasn’t already been set up near an online student’s home, he or she can add sites like public libraries.
Most professors require midterm and final exams that necessitate a proctor or campus visit.
The requirements for applying to the East Carolina University’s online MBA program include:
- Completion of the graduate school application
- Undergraduate transcripts
- GMAT scores
There is a $70 application fee. This is waived for military personnel who are currently on active duty or who have been on active duty within three years before applying.
Students can request a GMAT waiver if they held a 3.3 GPA in their undergraduate studies and they have at least 10 years of full-time work experience.
Tuition and Financial Aid
A base level online MBA from ECU currently costs $49,080 based on a 60 credit hour requirement. The costs of the program would be less for North Carolina residents.
Tuition waivers and graduate assistantships are not available to online students.
Graduate-level scholarships are awarded each semester. Part-time students must be registered for at least six semester hours in business to be eligible for this scholarship. The awards are for one semester and typically range from $1,000 to $3,500 depending on the student’s registration level. Applications must be received by May 1 for fall semester and by Sept. 1 for spring semester.
Scholarship applications require:
- Completed online scholarship application
- An original essay of no more than 250 words explaining why the student deserves the scholarship
- A current Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on file with the ECU Financial Aid Office (U.S. students only) for the semester in which you are applying for the scholarship
All Graduate Business Student Scholarships will be reviewed by the CoB Graduate Programs Office and the associate dean for the College of Business.
