School Site: Ellis University Online MBA Program
Based in Oakbrook Terrace, Illinois, a Chicago suburb, Ellis University is a distance learning university offering several associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees.
Like most MBA programs, Ellis’ online MBA offers various specializations, along with the option of choosing a general MBA without a concentration. What sets Ellis apart, however, is giving its students the option of choosing two specializations. For students who hope to go this route, they’ll have to take 9 extra credit hours in their second specialization. Being an online school, Ellis University’s MBA offerings are particularly ahead of the curve technologically. For example, Ellis offers a fairly hard-to-find concentration – e-commerce, a booming field that’s often not adequately taught in most MBA programs. Another unique concentration offered is Risk Management.
Although the MBA program offered at Ellis is not accredited itself, the overall school is institutionally accredited by the DEAC. The DEAC was first founded in 1926 as the National Home Study Council (NHSC), to protect students taking correspondence courses from fraud. In 1959, the U.S. Office of Education officially recognized the NHSC as an accreditor of universities. Now, the DEAC is recognized both by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
Although national accreditations like the DEAC are often not seen as rigorous as regional accreditations, the DEAC in particular has very high standards. According to the DEAC’s CEO, 70% of DEAC graduates successfully transfer credits to regionally-accredited institutions, indicating that most institutions understand the rigor of a DEAC school. What’s more, most corporations accept credits from DEAC institutions in their tuition reimbursement programs.
Ellis University’s online MBA program has fairly standard requirements. Students must complete at minimum, 36 hours of course work, including a 27-credit hour core curriculum. If students choose to specialize in a specific area, they have the following concentration options:
- Global Management
- Health Care Administration
- Management of Information Systems
- Professional Accounting
- Public Accounting
- Project Management
- Risk Management
The MBA program’s core curriculum is a rigorous one, including all the major topics all business professionals should know. Examples of classes in the core curriculum include Managerial Marketing, Economics for Managers, Managerial Corporate Finance, Managerial Strategy, and Global Environment of Business, among others. As you can see, Ellis’ MBA places great emphasis on the managerial aspects of business, thus setting up students for future success as true business leaders.
Each concentration has three to four different courses from which to choose. Those who decide to concentrate in a specific field must take at least 9 credit hours, or three courses. Those who want to pursue an additional concentration must take another 9 credit hours in their second concentration. Students typically take 18 months to complete the entire MBA program.
As an online MBA program, the program has no set class times. Students can do their work whenever they want, wherever they want. Each course does have deadlines for assignments and tests, so as long as students meet these deadlines, the program provides all the flexibility in the world.
Admission to Ellis University’s MBA program is fairly straightforward. As a fully online program part of a fully online institution, there are many start dates – nine in total — so that students can enroll at their leisure. Since all courses are accelerated, students are encouraged to cap their course load at 9 credit hours per trimester, for a total of 27 hours per year. For more information about admissions and enrollment, contact Ellis University.
Admissions requirements at Ellis are basic. All MBA applicants must have at least a bachelor’s degree from an institution accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the DoE or the CHEA. Applicants also must pay a $75 application fee. To start the application process, visit the main MBA page.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Unlike many online universities, Ellis University is completely upfront about its tuition and costs. Students have two payment options – paying per month, or paying per trimester. Tuition costs per course for the MBA are as follows:
- Pay by month: $1000 per course
- Pay by trimester $750 per course
Since the MBA program consists of 36-credit hours, or 12 courses, the base tuition cost is $12,000 for the whole program. If students elect to pay per trimester, for a total of four semesters (three courses per trimester), they will receive a discount on tuition — $9,000 for the entire program.
While Ellis does not offer financial aid, it does encourageactive duty military members and veterans to use their Tuition Assistance benefits for their programs.
