James Madison University was founded in 1908 in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. It is a public, four-year institution that offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a wide range of disciplines. James Madison also offers an MBA program available in a blended format. Students are able to access lectures and course materials at any time, in a way that works best with their schedules, and also benefit from a small amount of regular, in-person class meetings. The university’s business school was ranked 11th among public universities by Bloomberg Businessweek.


James Madison University has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges since 1927. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is the regional body for the accreditation of colleges and universities in the Southern states. The association is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Commission of Higher Education Accreditation.


James Madison University offers two MBA programs: the Innovation MBA and the Information Security MBA. The Innovation MBA program recognizes innovation as the primary source of competition in the future of business and seeks to give students the ability to create business environments that promote the best forms of innovation. Course work includes Business Ethics and Social Responsibility; Cultural Awareness Experience; Entrepreneurship and Venture Creation; and Managing in an Innovation-Driven Global Environment.

The Information Security MBA seeks to prepare students to become leaders in business environments that are increasingly dependent on the use of technology to store and communicate vital information. Students will become prepared to manage employees while protecting information through courses such as Information Security Ethics and Policy; Managerial Computer Forensics; Strategic Management; and Investment Analysis.

Student Life

Students in the Innovation and Information Security MBA programs will have some scheduled meetings on campus and a combination of synchronous and asynchronous class times and course work online. Students will have some scheduled online class meetings, during which they and the professor will meet virtually to have lectures and discuss information. Students will also have access to course material in an asynchronous format, so they can listen to some lectures on their own time and read course materials online at a flexible pace.


To apply for admission to either MBA program at James Madison, all students much submit a Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) score, proof of cumulative undergraduate grade point average, a resume citing work experience and two letters of recommendation. Students must have a minimum of two years full-time work experience. According to the school website, recent students have an average 3.2 undergraduate GPA , a 570 GMAT and four years work experience. College Navigator reports a 61 percent acceptance rate for undergraduates.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for the Innovation MBA program for 2009-2010 was $1,200 per course or $400 per credit. The program consists of 48 credit hours, which works out to $19,200 for the entire program. The Information Security MBA consists of 14 courses at $718 per credit hour, which comes to a total of $30,156 for the program. Students may be eligible for federal aid by filling out a FAFSA. About 25 percent of all undergraduate students receive some form of aid.
