In addition to core courses, students will be required to complete courses specific to their chosen specialization.
An online educational experience at JIU means the flexibility of earning a degree on your own time. Courses operate during eight week sessions that are set up by weekly modules that include an online instruction unit, reading assignment, forum discussion and paper or group project. Students are given the freedom to work on courses whenever their schedule allows from the comfort of their own home or wherever an Internet connection is available. The only stipulation is that each module must be completed in its entirety at the end of the assigned week, as the class will then move on to the next assigned module. While students move through modules as a class, there are no set times that they are required to participate in discussions or number of times they must log into classes. According to JIU’s website, students spend about 12 to 15 hours per week on each module.
When applying for one of JIU’s MBA programs, students will be required to submit the following:
- A completed application form from the school
- $60 application fee
- An undergraduate transcript from an accredited university
- Proof of a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5
The undergraduate admissions for JIU was 99 percent during the fall 2009 term, according to the College Navigator, but admissions for the school’s graduate business program will most likely be more difficult. Applicants should be able to find out whether or not they have been admitted shortly after submitting their application package. Those who are applying to master’s programs are given a three-month time frame to complete their application; after three months, applications expire and students must reapply to restart the process over again. While enrolled in a master’s program at JIU, students will need to maintain a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA to be eligible for graduation. This ensures that every graduate has satisfactorily completed the program and met all learning objectives.
Tuition and Financial Aid
An MBA program from JIU costs approximately $28,980 for the entire program, working out to 36 credit hours at $2,415 per three credit hours or per course, according to JIU’s 2011 tuition and fees schedule. There are no other materials or programs required so students should not have to spend more money on software or books, although there may be miscellaneous fees associated with transcripts, incomplete courses or specific services. Financial aid is available to all students attending JIU, such as federal loans, grants and scholarships, as well as payment plan options. MBA students can submit a FAFSA application to find out what types of federal aid they are eligible to receive. JIU offers a variety of payment options for employers who provide corporate tuition assistance for their employees. The same options are available for students who qualify for military tuition assistance. According to JIU’s website, the majority of students enrolled in academic programs use some type of aid to reduce their tuition expenses.
