The Poole College of Management’s Jenkins Graduate School at North Carolina State University (NC State) began offering an online MBA degree program in the fall of 2011. Reflecting the strengths of its full-time resident program, the NC State Jenkins online MBA is geared toward the high-tech market and taught from the management of technology perspective, including courses in analytics, product innovation, project management.

There are two residency requirements for the for the two-year, 48-credit program; At the beginning of the program for an on-site orientation in Raleigh, and a global immersion abroad in the summer between the first and second years.


The NC State Poole College’s programs were initially accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) as part of the college’s initial business accreditation, awarded in 2000. Maintenance of accreditation for the college’s business programs and separate accreditation for the accounting programs were awarded in 2010.


The Master of Business Administration at NC State emphasizes technology management. Students take an integrated core curriculum, focusing on technology, business processes, and practical applications in a collaborative learning environment. Students also take a course in managerial effectiveness. This emphasizes communication skills, networking, negotiations, team skills, ethics, and social responsibility.

Professors often use case discussions so students must confront real business problems and practice the art of business communication. During the first semester, students join a peer group of four to five people with whom they tackle assignments, class projects, and outside study. The NC State Jenkins Online MBA program is taught using asynchronous methods, meaning students can complete the course requirements at a time and location convenient that is convenient for them, within the deadlines set by each professor. Teaching methods will include podcasts linked with PowerPoint, tools such as Moodle and Elluminate, streaming video files, and discussion boards. Face-to-face instruction will be used for the two residence courses in the program: Managerial and Career Effectiveness and a study abroad course.


The prerequisites to admission include:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • One course in statistics or calculus prior to matriculation. Classes that count towards this prerequisite are Statistics (ST) 311 & 350 or Calculus (MA) 121, 131 or 141.
  • Two years of full-time, post-baccalaureate professional employment are required for applicants to the Online MBA program.

All applicants are required to submit official GMAT or GRE scores, regardless of their professional background, except for applicants with a Ph.D., Pharm.D., JD, or MD.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The online MBA program base tuition is approximately $53,685 for non-North Carolina residents, costing $1,193 per credit hour, according to the school’s 2012-13 school year tuition calendar. The base program cost does not include fees, course materials, or additional credits.

NC State participates in a variety of student loan programs from federal and private sources that must be repaid. Federal loan programs are options for U.S. citizens and legal residents. Private education loan programs are options for all applicants, including international students. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid and the Financial Aid Data forms are required to determine eligibility.
