Introduction

The Rochester Institute of Technology was founded in 1829 as the Athenaeum, a community learning center that endeavored to promote the arts and sciences. Today, RIT offers much more than just courses on the arts and sciences; the school now offers associate, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees as well as advanced certification programs in a variety of fields, including business administration, health care and management.

Accreditation

RIT has been accredited by the Middle States Commission on Higher Education since 1958. This accrediting agency, active since 1919, is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as being a reliable evaluator of education quality for schools within the Middle States region. The school also has several specialized accreditations for its programs, including recognition from the American Dietetic Association, Commission on Accreditation for Dietetics Education for its Didactic Program in Dietetics and recognition from the Teacher Education Accreditation Council, Accreditation Committee for its Graduate Teacher Education Accreditation Council graduate programs. The Saunders College of Business is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.

Academics

The master of business administration degree offered by RIT is designed to challenge students and provide them with up-to-date industry knowledge on management and business practices and theories. Unlike most MBA programs that are tailored toward those who have less work experience in the business field, RIT’s EMBA program was designed for those who already have experience and are looking to delve deeper into the subject. Most of the school’s EMBA students are already working in the business field and are looking to expand their knowledge and move up in their careers. The courses for the EMBA program include; Leadership Development, Power and Influence, Strategic Thinking, International Business and Executive Leadership, among many others. All of these topics will allow students to think creatively, network and lead. Graduates of RIT’s EMBA program have gone to work for big companies such as Lockheed Martin, Microsoft, Wells Fargo and Sony Electronics.

Student Life

With an online education from RIT, students have the freedom to earn their degree on their own schedule. Students still have to meet strict deadlines, but they will have the opportunity to skip the stress of driving all the way to a campus every day. Students enrolled in RIT’s online EMBA program are typically working adults who are looking to further their education to move up in their careers. This is a cohort-based program so students work through all courses together in a set sequence. This allows for great networking and collaboration among classmates. Students are required to attend a 3-day onsite residency at the beginning of the program which allows them to meet each other and their professors before classes start.

Admission

Students have the opportunity to enroll two times each year and applications are accepted on a rolling basis. When applying for a spot in RIT’s online EMBA program, students will need to supply the following items:

  • A completed application form from the school
  • A resume detailing the student’s career experience (minimum of six years of work experience)
  • An undergraduate transcript from an accredited university
  • Three letters of recommendation, one of which must be from a work supervisor
  • A personal statement
  • Application fee

The admissions committee places a strong emphasis on work experience, letters of recommendation from supervisors and  commitment to the program. All applicants should find out whether they have been admitted within two weeks of the application deadline. Graduate students will need to maintain a 3.0 GPA to continue with their studies. This ensures that all students are performing to the best of their capabilities and effectively learning and practicing the business skills and theories their degree programs cover.
