Saint Leo University was founded in 1889, when it became the first Catholic institution of higher learning in Florida. Today, SLU offers more than 41 academic programs to more than 15,000 students at its main campus, Center for Online Learning and various learning centers throughout seven states. At SLU students can earn associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree in a variety of fields, including business, criminal justice, education, social work, theology and liberal arts.


SLU has been accredited since 1967 by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Founded in 1895, the association is one of the six regional accreditation organizations in the country and serves as the recognized regional accrediting body for the 11 Southern states. It is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation as being a reputable evaluator of postsecondary institutions’ educational quality. In addition, SLU’s MBA program is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education. This assembly strives to promote and foster excellence in business education and accredits only programs that have met specific criteria based on the organization’s defined “Characteristics of Excellence in Business Education.”

These types of programs allow students to develop a thorough understanding of business principles through courses such as Professional Development, Organizational Behavior, the Legal Environment of Business, Decision Support Systems, Corporate Finance, Strategic Management and Managerial Economics. In addition to core business courses, students also take elective classes within their chosen concentration.

Student Life

An online education from SLU enables students to earn their degree on their own time without the constraints of set class times and structured course schedules. Although students will still have due dates and deadlines to abide by, they are given the freedom to decide where and when they will complete course work. SLU online MBA programs are specifically designed for career-minded individuals who are looking to attain the advanced level of education needed for leadership positions in organizations. As nontraditional students, many of those enrolled in SLU’s online MBA programs are adult learners, working professionals and members of the armed forces. Using the latest Internet technology, SLU’s innovative online programs deliver instruction to students through streaming videos, bulletin boards, CD-ROMs and chat rooms. Courses last approximately eight weeks with no more than 25 students enrolled in each. Those who take two classes per eight week term are able to graduate in as little as 12 months.


If you want to apply for one of SLU’s MBA programs, you must be able to provide the following items:

  • A completed online admission application from the school
  • Application fee
  • An official undergraduate and or graduate transcript from an accredited institution
  • A statement of professional goals
  • Two professional recommendations
  • A current resume
  • Proof of a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0

To be eligible for SLU’s MBA programs students must have earned an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution, be fluent in the English language and be able to demonstrate at least five years of progressive work experience. Those who are unable to meet the minimum work requirements may submit official GMAT test scores for the admissions committee to consider. The university accepts applications on a rolling basis and there are six start times throughout the year. About 78 percent of SLU undergrads who applied for fall 2010 were accepted, according to College Navigator.

Tuition and Financial Aid

An online MBA program from SLU costs approximately $23,436, which consists of 36 semester credit hours, or 12 courses, at $651 per credit hour, according to the school’s website. Total cost of education can differ depending on the materials and or software required in a particular program. Although most course material is provided, online students may have additional expenses for textbooks and computer requirements. Financial aid is available to all students enrolled in SLU’s programs, including federal loans, grants and scholarships. MBA students can submit a FAFSA application for federal aid. SLU also offers a discounted rate for those in the military, and accepts veterans benefits and military tuition assistance for eligible students.
