Sam Houston State University was established in 1879 as the first teacher-training school in the Southwest. The public Texas institution now offers its bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees to about 15,000 students. Already proven as a technology-friendly school, it furthered its e-learning reputation by joining a consortium of online institutions in 2011. SHSU’s business and management programs are among its most popular offerings. The university’s focus on innovation and its reputation as one of the most “wired” universities in the U.S. make it an ideal choice for students looking to earn an MBA from home.
Since 1925, Sam Houston State University has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges. Established in 1895, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges is charged with the accreditation of degree-granting higher education institutions in the 11 Southern states.
SHSU offers both the MBA and the Executive MBA, but only the MBA is available entirely online. The EMBA, which emphasizes banking and finance, is available in an on-campus/online hybrid. The school offers an online MBA in these concentrations:
- Master of Business Administration (MBA): Emphasis in Accounting
- Master of Business Administration (MBA): Emphasis in Finance
- Master of Business Administration (MBA): Emphasis in General Management
- Master of Business Administration (MBA): Emphasis in Human Resources Management
- Master of Business Administration (MBA): Emphasis in Marketing
Not only does SHSU offer a quality-based program, it features a restaurant-style menu of classes that students can customize to suit their needs. Students can elect to complete the program fully online or combine virtual learning with evening classes in Texas at either the Woodlands or Huntsville campus.
Application requirements include a $20 application fee, GMAT scores and official transcripts of all college work. An undergraduate business degree is preferred, but students with non-business degrees may still apply. SHSU offers stem classes to prepare non-business degree holders for the full MBA program. The stem classes are only partially available online. SHSU is selective, with an acceptance rate of 71.8 percent. Students must submit their application by Aug. 1 for fall semester consideration, Dec. 1 for spring, May 15 for summer and June 15 for the second summer session.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The cost of SHSU’s business program varies by location and content delivery method. Its full-time tuition is approximately $431.33 per credit hour for in-state students and $676.33 per credit hour for out-of-state students. Graduate students are eligible for scholarships but they are very limited. SHSU students are also eligible for financial aid.
