Introduction

The University of Guelph, located near the western end of Lake Ontario in Ontario, Canada, offers a hybrid MBA degree program. Unlike a general MBA, Guelph only offers its MBA in two specializations – food and agribusiness management, and hospitality. The two specializations reflect the schools the university is nationally known and recognized for. The school is accredited by Canada’s Department of Plant Agriculture, among other agriculture-related bodies.

Accreditation

The University of Guelph is certified by the Provence of Ontario to grant degrees, which is comparable to a regional accreditation in the United States. Guelph also began the process to become accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), a distinction given to only about 5% of the world’s business schools. The accreditation process takes 1-3 years.

Academics

Students in the Guelph MBA program complete the majority of the program online, but there are mandatory resident requirements. Students spend one week to 10 days completely one-credit, intense “full-time” courses, which last five days, during their stay at the campus. Students have the “traditional” MBA experience of working closely with their peers but the rest of the course work allows students to continue working in their existing jobs. The course begins with a shorter face-to-face course, which allows classmates to meet. In total for the MBA program, students spend three weeks at the Guelph campus over the two-year program – the introductory course, a spring semester course and a final course before graduation.

Admission

Requirements for admission into the Guelph MBA program include a four-year bachelors undergraduate degree from a “recognized university” with a minimum average of “B-“ (70-72%) during the last four semesters or two academic years of the program along with a minimum of three years of relevant work experience. Guelph admissions will also accept general degree, diploma and/or an acceptable professional designation and at least five years of work experience showing progressive increases in responsibility.

Admissions officers also look for 3-5 years of work experience in the industry.

In addition, students must provide the following:

  • Signed Application Form
  • Non-refundable application fee of $150
  • Original Transcripts
  • Two Reference Assessments
  • Statement of Interest
  • Resume (Formal Education / Professional Achievement)
  • Proof of Funding (International Students)

Guelph does not require a GMAT test score.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The online MBA program fee is $41,190 (CAD) and $45,240 (CAD) for international participants. The program fee is payable by installments over a two-year period in Canadian funds and includes tuition, course materials, and residential stays (excluding transportation costs).

MA in Leadership

In additional to its MBA program, Guelph offers a master’s in leadership which follows the same hybrid model; however, there is one less residence requirement.

While there in not a defined number of years of experience required for the MA program, applicants must show they’ve held a leadership role, in order to have the context for what the program will teach them. Typically, students come into the program with 5+ years of experience.
