Introduction

The University of Massachusetts-Amherst began in 1863 with four faculty members and 56 students. What started out on a 310-acre plot is now the flagship campus for the University of Massachusetts system. The school is located on approximately 1,450 acres about 90 miles from Boston. There are approximately 220,000 alumni in the world today.

The school’s W.E.B. Du Bois Library was named “the tallest library in the world” when it was completed in 1973 and houses more than 8 million items. The library system is the largest at a state-supported institution in New England.

Accreditation

The Isenberg School of Management at UMass-Amherst is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business and offers students the alternatives for a full-time, hybrid, or online MBA. The university is regionally accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

Academics

The online program involves students from all over the nation and 23 different countries, helping gather various perspectives from all over the world. The program only offers the MBA in Management.

Perspective students must complete 37 credit hours. The program has 30 electives to choose from, ranging from 1-3 credit hours. The program is split into three semesters: spring, summer, and fall. The university requires students to take at least one course per spring and fall semesters.

The program will accept up to six credit hours transferred from another institution. The student must have a grade of at least a B in the transferred course and the course must have been taken within three years of acceptance to the school.

Admission

The Isenberg School of Management online MBA program only takes students with business experience and seriousness for the business world. The following are the guidelines for applying to the school:

  • Three or more years of post-undergraduate business experience is preferred
  • Submit graduate school application
  • Personal statement
  • GMAT or GRE – no minimum score required
  • Two letters of recommendation (professional preferred)
  • Transcripts from previous colleges or universities attended
  • Résumé
  • Application fee

Perspective students with terminal degrees or a Fifth Pathway Certificate; or have completed a Master’s Degree with a GPA of 3.75 or higher and 8 years of work history are eligible to have the GMAT waived.

There are additional requirements for international students.

The program participates in benefits for students with a military background. UMass of Amherst was selected as a top “military friendly” school by GI Jobs for 2012 and was chosen as a “Best for Vets College” for 2011 by Military Times EDGE.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The online MBA costs $750 per credit hour along with a non-refundable $45 registration fee per semester. The fall and spring semesters are 14 weeks in length, and the summer semester is eight weeks.

Students who do not have an undergraduate degree or have not taken the prerequisite courses in business must take the Isenberg School of Management’s Foundations of Business prerequisite. The Foundations of Business course is a $3,000, three-segment program: management, accounting and finance, and analytic tools. The program is offered during the winter or summer mini-semesters only.

UMass-Amherst participates in a variety of student loan programs from federal and private sources that must be repaid. Federal loan programs are options for U.S. citizens and legal residents. Private education loan programs are options for all applicants, including international students. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid and the Financial Aid Data forms are required to determine eligibility.
