The University of South Dakota, located in Vermillion, was founded in 1862 and is the state’s oldest university. The Beacom School of Business was established in 1927 and is the only accredited business program in South Dakota.
The Beacom School of Business MBA program is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB).
The online MBA can be earned in as little as two years if the student has completed the six, three-credit hour foundational business courses: Foundations of Accounting, Foundations of Finance, Foundations of Calculus and Statistics for Business, Production Operations Management, Foundations of Marketing and Organizational Behavior, and Foundations of Economics. If the 18 hours have been completed before starting the online MBA program, the student will be given “advanced standing” and will need to complete only the 33 hours of advanced courses, rather than the full 51 hours.
Credit hours from a previous institution can transfer to the school’s MBA program.
The spring and fall semesters are 16 weeks long and the summer semesters are six to 12 weeks long. Prospective students must apply by June 1 for the fall semester, Oct. 1 for spring and March 1 for summer.
Each course is three-credit hours with most online students taking one to two courses per semester.
The requirements for applying to the University of South Dakota online MBA program, which are the same as for the full-time and hybrid programs, include:
- Completion of the graduate school application
- A résumé and a statement of purpose
- One official transcript of all prior academic work showing an undergraduate degree earned and a GPA of at least 2.7
- Two letters of recommendations
- GMAT scores
- A TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is mandatory for international students who have not graduated from an American university or whose country has an official language other than English. The student must score at least a 79. The IELTS (International English Testing System) is also accepted at the University of South Dakota; a score of 6.0 or better is required.
- $35 application fee
Additional requirements exist for international students, including a financial statement.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The 2012-2013 tuition rate is $383 per credit hour for a base program cost of $12,639.
Students, regardless of their state of residence, must be enrolled in six-credit hours per semester to qualify for federal financial aid.
South Dakota National Guard and Air Guard members can enroll for 50 percent of the resident tuition rate. South Dakota state employees are also eligible for reduced tuition.
