Introduction

The University of Texas at Tyler was founded in 1971 in East Texas and is part of the highly regarded University of Texas System. While UT – Tyler’s main campus is in Tyler, the university also has satellite campuses in Palestine and Longview. The goal of UT – Tyler’s MBA program is to equip students with the skills and knowledge they need to become effective corporate leaders in dynamic business environments. Students may opt to take the program fully online, with once-a-week evening meetings, or in residence at the Tyler, Longview, or Palestine campuses.

Accreditation

The University of Texas at Tyler’s College of Business and Technology, through which the university offers its MBA program, is accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB – International), which is considered the gold standard for schools of business and accounting. UT – Tyler holds institutional accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges. The university has held regional accreditation since 1974, according to College Navigator.

Academics

The UT – Tyler online MBA program offers a broad curriculum with no thesis requirement. A unique feature of UT – Tyler’s MBA program is that students are required to complete a certain amount of community service while enrolled in the program. Students who have undergraduate deficiencies may start out taking fundamental competency courses in accounting, economics, finance, management, marketing, statistics, or leadership.

Required courses for 2012-2014 include: Accounting for Management Control, Advanced Economic Analysis, Advanced Financial Management, Global Business Perspectives, Strategic Human Resource Management, and more, according to posted degree requirements. One of the most crucial courses students take is Formulating and Implementing Strategy, which concludes with a capstone project, the crowning achievement of a student’s MBA program. Students must maintain a minimum of 3.0 GPA to remain in the program.

Admission

Students applying to the University of Texas at Tyler online MBA must fill out the ApplyTexas application, pay the application fee, submit official transcripts, and submit official scores on the GMAT. Students must show the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
  • An acceptable GPA in the last 60 hours of undergraduate work

  • Computer and statistical literacy (students whose undergraduate major was in business are typically exempt from having to take leveling courses)

Applicants who did not graduate from an AACSB-accredited undergraduate program must take a full complement of leveling courses, including 15 graduate hours in courses like economics, accounting, finance, etc., before they can begin taking core MBA courses.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The base cost of an MBA at UT – Tyler is $26,208 at $728 per credit for 36 required credit hours. Students may seek financial aid, including loans, grants, scholarships, and work study, to cover the cost of college. Students may wish to apply for the UT – Tyler’s New Graduate Student Fellowship, which awards $1,000 each year to qualifying students.
