The University of the Southwest is a private, nondenominational Christian college in Hobbs, N.M. The school has a distinguished religious heritage, as it was founded by a man who is said to have prayed that God would “give him New Mexico for Christian education,” according to the school’s website. The school was chartered in 1956 as a two-year junior college and has since expanded both in size and scope. The university offers bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a variety of fields, including business, mental health counseling and education. Its online master’s degrees in business administration are particularly accommodating to working professionals.
The University of the Southwest holds institutional accreditation from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Higher Learning Commission. The university has held and maintained this accreditation since 1980, according to College Navigator.

Students take a wide range of core courses, starting out with Business Statistics Research Design. Other core courses are built into the program to give students a comprehensive business administration education. Those include: Controllership, Marketing Concepts and Strategies, Internal Audit Theory and Practice, Human Resource Management and Financial Management. Other courses focus on the information technology that has become essential in the business world. Another course, Transforming Business in the 21st Century, focuses on skills such as conflict resolution and communication, as well as technical competency. Candidates for admission to the MBA program should be well-qualified professionals grounded by practical experience and will need to be able to demonstrate effective communication skills, including oral, written and technological. Applicants must also provide references to vouch for their character, dependability, and written and oral communication skills.
Tuition and Financial Aid
The University of the Southwest is proud to offer affordable tuition. Within the Council for Christian Colleges and Universities, Southwest’s cost was among the six lowest, the university says. The cost of graduate tuition is $544 per credit hour, with all courses consisting of three credit hours. With 36 credit hours for the whole program, the total cost of your courses will add up to $19,584. College Navigator broke down college student tuition and fees for the 2010-2011 academic year as $9,216. The school estimates the cost of books to be $600 to $1,200 per year, depending on the courses taken. The school also offers generous financial aid packages. To apply for this aid as well as federal aid, students must complete a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). Institutional scholarships are based on academic merit, athletics and student involvement. Students may also apply for donor-funded, named scholarships. All students receive some financial aid at Southwest, according to College Navigator.
