Washington State University was created as a land-grant institution in 1890. Originally focused on agriculture and engineering, the school has innovated with the times to reflect the diversified global economy. The university is classified as one of 96 US institutions with very high research activity by the Carnegie Foundation.

The core of the Washington State University online MBA program revolves around the business school’s three pillars: Globally competitive leadership, management innovation, and positive societal impact. Students are encouraged to think independently, explore theoretical and applied knowledge, and negotiate business challenges. The MBA program also orients students to become change agents in their current or future corporate or entrepreneurial roles.

Students pursue a core curriculum that requires three courses in strategic leadership, two in management innovation, and four in functional business tools. In addition, MBA candidates choose three elective courses in an area of their interest. Students concentrate on one seven-week course at a time, allowing them to balance a weekly 20 hour workload with their job or life commitments.

Rather than a thesis, students work with faculty on a business plan throughout the two year program. The plan involves setting up a new business or an expansion of the company they currently work for. As a condition of graduation, the final plan will be presented to a faculty committee in the form of a 10-15 minute video pitch, as if the student were seeking investor funding for their venture.

While the Washington State University online MBA program utilizes an asynchronous platform for its courses, there are weekly deadlines set by course instructors. There are also opportunities to engage with classmates via live chats and discussion boards to review course material and concepts.


The GMAT is required for admission to the program. Students who are admitted to the program has a score greater than 550. In addition to the GMAT and a completed application, students must submit three letters of recommendation, a clear statement of purpose, a current resume, official transcripts from an accredited undergraduate institution, official copies of diplomas and/or certificates of academic work, and demonstrated competence in business foundations. There is a $50 application fee.

Foundation courses are required for students who did not pursue an undergraduate business degree, though there are several options available to test out of the requirements. Students who choose to take the foundation courses can complete the total program in 30 months while working full time, though the cost of the program will increase. Full details of the foundation options should be discussed with an admissions advisor.

Tuition and Financial Aid

Tuition for the base program that begins in 2012 will total $29,250. There are a total of 39 credit hours (13 courses, including capstone) required to complete the program. The per credit hour rate is $750. The school has a military rate of $658 per credit hour.

The base program cost does not include an average of $150 per course for texts or individual fees for some courses, which will be specified at registration.

Washington State University provides each MBA student with an academic advisor, 24/7 technical support, financial aid counseling, and registration assistance. The school’s library offers digital databases and journals to support academic work. Students have access to an extensive alumni and corporate alliance network. Students are also encouraged to utilize Facebook pages to network with their fellow students. The school’s learning management system is a variant of the popular web-based Blackboard software.
