Introduction

Western New England University, a private higher education institution in Springfield, Mass., took on its current name in 2011 after carrying the name Western New England College since the 1950s. The institution’s new status as a university reflects the breadth and depth of its academic offerings, which include an AACSB-accredited MBA program. The university’s College of Business offers a cohort-based, traditional MBA program as well as an interactive, 100% online MBA program. The Western New England University online MBA provides a greater level of flexibility to working professionals who cannot participate in the day program due to work constraints.

Accreditation

Western New England University is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Commission on Institutions of Higher Education. The institution has maintained this accreditation since 1965. In addition, the university’s College of Business and its MBA program are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB International).

Academics

Of the many online MBA programs in Massachusetts, Western New England College’s program is among the most flexible, allowing students to earn their MBA at their own pace, and giving students the option of whether or not they wish to attend on-campus classes. Students have up to eight years to complete the program if necessary, although the typical time to completion for students who work full-time jobs is 18-22 months. Online MBA courses are delivered through an on online portal called Kodiak and are offered in accelerated 11-week terms. Required courses include Accounting for Decision Makers, Information Technology Management and Applications, Strategic Management, Managerial Finance, Organizational Behavior and Theory, Marketing Management, and more.

Admission

Western New England University has rolling admissions, meaning students do not have to apply to the program by a set deadline. To apply, students must submit the following:

  • Completed application
  • $30 application fee
  • Official transcripts from all colleges and universities previously attended
  • Official GMAT scores
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Two essays
  • Recent resume or curriculum vitae

Before students can register for any core MBA courses, they must have fulfilled all necessary prerequisites, including accounting, statistics, microeconomics, and finance with at least a “B” average.

Tuition and Financial Aid

The cost per credit for the Western New England University online MBA program is $735 for the 2012-2013 academic year. With 36 graduate credits required, the total base tuition cost for the MBA program is $26,460, not counting any fees, books, or other course materials. Financial aid is available for students who qualify in the form of state and federal loans and grants. Many students receive tuition reimbursement through their employer.
