If you decide to pursue your MBA through an online program, you’ll not only have the convenience of working on your coursework when and where its easiest for you, but you’ll also still be able to pursue many of the same online MBA programs as those in more traditional on-campus classes as well. With the widespread omnipresence of the Internet, the number of online programs in every educational field, including MBAs, has risen drastically over the last decade. Students will have a large number of schools to choose from when taking an online program and can choose the format and specializations that work best with their personal career goals. In general, students will find the same high-quality MBA programs available through online schools, though there may be some advantages or disadvantages to each unique program.
The majority of online MBA programs take place exclusively in the online setting. This means that students will get lecture material, assignments and feedback from professors online without ever attending any in class sessions. Many online colleges offer students the chance to interact with classmates as well through online chat rooms, emails and discussion forums so that students can learn and network with others in their degree program. Online programs make it easier for many students to balance other aspects of their lives while getting an MBA, as many will be able to maintain regular jobs and still have time for families as coursework is completed at times when it’s most convenient for the student.
Exclusively online programs aren’t the only option, however, as some schools offer programs that blend the convenience of online coursework with the support and interaction that comes from classroom experience. These courses may have students attend the majority of their classes online while meeting once or twice a month in a classroom setting. This kind of intermediary program may work well for students who want to get to know their teachers and classmates better, but don’t have the time to go to on-campus courses every day.
As for the general kinds of MBA programs offered online, these often differ little from those offered in the classroom. This means that students will find both general MBA studies as well as more specialized programs in their online colleges as well. Depending on the school, specialty programs like accelerated MBAs, mini MBAs and executive MBAs may be available as well.
Taking courses online isn’t all perks, however, as online programs require students that work well independently and need little guidance and support from peers and professors. If you know you work better with others, consider whether a more traditional course may be better suited to you, or try taking a few courses first without investing a large sum of money that may not be refundable.
