Montana is known for its outdoor culture with mountain ranges, rivers, and national forests, but it is also home to approximately 1 million people and 31 colleges. More than half of those offer online courses, unfortunately none of them offer an online MBA. The state has 16 universities and colleges within its Montana University System (MUS) which has more than 47,000 students enrolled.

The largest higher education institution within the MUS and in the state is the University of Montana based in Missoula which has 15,669 students enrolled. More than 2,000 of those students are in graduate programs. With the addition of Montana State University-Bozeman, the two institutions combine for nearly two-thirds of MUS’s enrollment. Both of these institutions offer degrees from associate to doctoral.

Although only 5.7% of the state’s population have earned their master’s degree, which is 1.5 percentage points lower than the nation’s average – Montana has led all states in college completion with a 6% increase, according to a 2012 report. The national average over that span of time was 1%. The increase proves Montana is on the right track with its education initiatives.
