Carnegie Mellon University is a major private research institution based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1900, Carnegie Mellon ranks among the world’s most prestigious universities, boasting some of the best STEM programs available. The university is named after its founder, famed businessman Andrew Carnegie. Its prime location in a historic, business-oriented city serves students interested in business and entrepreneurship. CMU offers degrees at every level, but its graduate-level programs boast the most renown.
CMU alumni have won 10 Academy Awards, 20 Nobel prizes, 131 Emmy Awards, and 13 Turing Awards, among other distinctions. Notable alumni include painter and pop-art icon Andy Warhol; John Forbes Nash, recipient of the 1994 Nobel Prize in Economics; and billionaire investor Romesh Wadhwani.
Andrew Carnegie’s influence on Pittsburgh remains apparent. Nicknamed the Steel City due to Carnegie’s successful steel company, Pittsburgh grew into an industrious city known for its various businesses, startups, colleges, and universities. Pittsburgh also boasts a reputation as a center for arts and culture.
CMU offers two online MBA options: a part-time MBA and a part-time flex MBA. Both programs use online courses, but the flex program also allows learners to study on campus in Pittsburgh. Flex students must attend weekend on-campus courses 6 times per year. CMU expects students to continue working while earning their MBAs, estimating both programs to take 32 months to complete.
CMU students enjoy plenty of options for extracurricular activities. Learners may get involved with student government or choose from 280 club and organization options. Community service also plays a large role in student life. Additionally, CMU connects students with internships, research programs, and professional development opportunities.
CMU offers a flexible online MBA and uses rolling admission for some parts of the year, though students should apply one month before they plan to enroll. The university waives application fees for learners who apply during rolling admission. Each applicant should submit a current resume, a personal essay, a professional recommendation, and unofficial academic transcripts.
Just 39% of CMU students receive financial aid, but the university provides larger amounts of aid to students demonstrating financial need. For example, for learners whose families earn less than $50,000 per year, CMU might cover all expenses. CMU offers scholarships, internships, and fellowships, including some specifically for MBA students.
