Among the most profitable degrees available, the master's in business administration (MBA) can help graduates obtain a promotion, land a new career, or earn higher salaries. According to PayScale, annual salaries for MBA graduates average $88,040 -- over $22,000 more than their counterparts with a bachelor's in business administration. An MBA can make candidates competitive for many business and financial occupations, which enjoy high salaries and 7% job growth projections between 2018 and 2028, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).

Admissions requirements for online MBA programs typically include official transcripts, resumes, recommendation letters, and Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores. The 2018 GMAT Geographic Trend Report indicates that 1,997 U.S. MBA programs required GMAT scores in 2017. However, studying for and taking the GMAT requires time and money, and may be daunting for students with poor test performance. Fortunately, some online MBA programs require no GMAT scores, while others waive the requirement in lieu of successful GPAs, Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores, and/or professional experience.

See below for an overview of the best online MBA programs without GMAT requirements.

What Is the GMAT?

Created by a handful of business school deans in 1953 and first administered in 1954, the GMAT is a standardized test used to evaluate prospective business students' aptitude and potential. This four-part test features quantitative, integrated reasoning, verbal multiple choice, and analytical writing sections. These sections assess prospective business students' abilities in analysis, critical thinking, and problem-solving. The GMAT takes 3-4 hours to complete and costs $250.

Graduate degree programs that typically require the GMAT include the master's in management (MIM), the master's in business administration (MBA), and master of arts (MA) or master of science (MS) programs in business-related fields. Good business schools often look for a minimum GMAT score of 600, while top-programs may expect 700-800 scores. Doing well on this difficult test typically requires several months of serious study.

Students should plan to take the test several months prior to school application deadlines to allow time to retake the exam if necessary. Examine prospective MBA programs' GMAT requirements carefully, as some schools count only the most recent GMAT score and others accept the highest score. When making admissions decisions, some schools emphasize the essay score heavily, while MS programs may focus on the quantitative score.

Why Are Business Schools Waiving or Not Requiring the GMAT?

While the GMAT assesses a student's basic skills and can help demonstrate their preparedness for graduate study, it does not measure intangible qualities, such as leadership or teamwork ability. As a result, many business schools are eliminating their GMAT requirement -- or accepting GRE scores instead -- in the hopes of attracting a broader variety of promising applicants. Additionally, many schools recognize that advanced degrees and work experience provide strong evidence of the skills needed for success in business school. These days, schools that still insist on GMAT scores for admission generally do so as a way of gauging a student's commitment to earning a business degree while weeding out less serious candidates.

Offering alternatives to the GMAT benefits both schools and applicants by reducing hurdles that discourage prospective students from applying. For example, offering a GMAT waiver to students with demonstrated work experience benefits applicants who have been out of school for a few years, while schools gain a more diverse applicant pool of experienced professionals.

MBA Admission Requirements in Place of GMAT Scores

Studying for and taking the GMAT can be time-consuming and expensive, so some prospective students narrow their search to online MBA programs with no GMAT requirement or with GMAT waivers available to qualified applicants. Such schools emphasize other admission criteria such as professional experience, GPAs, leadership experience, and recommendation letters.

Some top online MBA programs require no GMAT scores from applicants with a few years of successful, relevant professional experience. Other possible GMAT substitutes may include high GRE scores, high undergraduate GPAs, or successful completion of prior graduate coursework.

  • Work Experience

Many of the best online MBA programs prefer applicants with a few years of professional experience under their belt. Programs that require GMAT scores often waive the standardized testing requirement for students with significant professional experience. Keep in mind that some business schools require a specific amount of work experience for consideration.

  • Advanced Degrees

Similarly, many programs with GMAT requirements do not force applicants with a master's degree to take the exam. A graduate degree proves to admissions officers that a particular applicant can handle the academic rigor of a top online MBA program.

  • Exceptional GPA

Business schools with no GMAT requirement may place extra emphasis on an applicant's undergraduate grades. By looking at a candidate's transcripts, admissions officers can evaluate a student's academic abilities, which they may normally deduce through GMAT scores. Programs that generally require the GMAT frequently waive the requirement for students with high GPAs.

  • Professional Licensure

Earning a professional license or certification may help aspiring business students stand out from other applicants. Students may demonstrate skills and industry knowledge through certification in a field such as project management, accounting, financial risk management, financial analysis, or human resources.

  • Letters of Recommendation

Recommendation letters are a crucial part of a student's application. By reading recommendation letters from professors and former supervisors, admissions staff can get a sense of an applicant's personality, work ethic, and dedication. Unlike test scores and grades, letters of recommendation add a personal component to an application.

  • Essay or Personal Statement

Most business schools require at least one essay or personal statement as part of their MBA requirements. Prospective business students typically need to explain their reasons for pursuing a business degree and why they're interested in a particular program. Applicants must elaborate on their academic interests and career goals.

  • Graduate Record Exam

A standardized test administered by the Education Testing Service, the GRE evaluates prospective graduate students' abilities in critical thinking, analytical writing, verbal reasoning, and quantitative reasoning. The GRE also meets the standardized test score requirement for many graduate schools, including some MBA programs. High GRE scores (often above 285) also can qualify MBA applicants for a GMAT waiver at some schools.

How We Rank Online MBA Programs

Want to know how we create our rankings? We assess schools based on academic quality, affordability, online flexibility, and student success.

Quality (30% of total score)

A low student-to-faculty ratio, a wide breadth of specialized MBA programs, and a high retention rate of students returning after their first year are all indicators of a quality university.

Affordability (10% of total score)

The amount of financial aid offered factors into a school's net price; this, paired with a low loan default rate, indicates that students may find a school's tuition within their budget.

Online Flexibility (20% of total score)

Scores for online flexibility focus on schools that have a high percentage of fully online students, but consideration is also given to schools that enroll partially online students using hybrid programs.

Student Success (40% of total score)

Both strong hallmarks of student success, we look for programs with high graduation rates whose students go on to have higher-than-average median earnings.

Evaluating MBA Programs Without GMAT Requirements

Today's crowded business education landscape features many MBA programs differing in characteristics and requirements. However, top MBA schools with no GMAT requirement often share the following five features. To identify the best MBA programs without GMAT requirements, look for these criteria during your program search and evaluation processes:

Accreditation
A voluntary process undergone by many higher education institutions and programs, accreditation evaluates and verifies academic quality. Approved accrediting organizations assess academic curricula, resources, and outcomes data and provide recommendations for improvement. Regional accreditation, typically reserved for nonprofit higher education institutions, is more rigorous and thus considered more prestigious than the national accreditation status held by many vocational and faith-based schools. Regional accreditation usually garners more respect from prospective schools and employers. Accreditation protects students by improving educational quality, increasing transparency, and ensuring return-on-investment (ROI). Consult this guide to learn more about MBA school and program accreditation.
Affordability
MBA programs can get very expensive, often ranging $50,000-$100,000 for tuition alone. Be sure to identify programs that can prove their value through positive ROI data. MBA programs also vary in number of credits, so compare programs both by price-per-credit and by total cost. For example, Messiah University's 36-credit MBA costs $710 per credit, which totals to just $25,560. Fortunately, top MBA programs with no GMAT requirements often prove relatively affordable.
Graduate Success
Some online MBA program websites post student-outcome statistics gathered from student surveys and institutional statistics. Often including graduation rates, employment rates, and post-graduation salary averages, this outcome data can help prospective students choose a program worth the financial investment. Concordia St. Paul, for example, boasts a 95% employment rate within one year of graduation and a $57,736 salary average within four years of graduation.
Online Resources
Most high-quality no-GMAT MBA programs offer various resources, including technical support, to assist distance learners. Schools with low student-to-faculty ratios often provide more mentorship, which enriches the online MBA experience considerably. Other online student resources may include career services such as internship support, resume review, and mock interviewing. Some schools, such as Norwich University, even provide a personalized student service advisor.
Robust Curricula
Well-established MBA programs with robust curricula often feature various concentrations. Concentrations allow students to specialize their course of MBA study based on their desired career path, field, and/or industry context. Bethel University, for example, boasts eight concentration options, including supply chain management, healthcare administration, principles of manufacturing, and strategy and execution. Common field-based concentrations include finance, data science, and management. Obtaining specialization, including a concentration-related MBA internship, can help qualify and prepare graduates for their dream careers.

Good MBA programs, including the no-GMAT online MBA programs ranked above, share most of these characteristics. However, keep in mind that prospective student needs, interests, resources, and preferences vary widely. For example, some students require more technical support, while other students seek networking and career help. Applicants on a tight budget often choose from among the most affordable options. Prospective MBAs should prioritize schools with curricula and resources supportive of their individual education and career goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?
The time it takes to prepare for the GMAT depends on factors such as your test-taking abilities and the time each day you can dedicate to studying outside of work and other obligations. You may want to spend three months or more preparing for the exam, depending on your schedule and goal score.
Are MBA programs that do not require the GMAT good?
Yes. Whether or not a program requires the GMAT typically does not reflect the program's quality. Plenty of top business schools do not require standardized tests and instead place extra emphasis on other parts of a student's application. Similarly, many excellent undergraduate programs no longer require the SAT or ACT.
What GPA should I have if I am not taking the GMAT?
Business schools often post minimum GPA requirements to their website, but you should always strive to get the best grades you can, since a high GPA increases your chances of getting into any business program. Schools that waive the GMAT requirements for students with certain GPAs often require at least a 3.5.
Do online MBA programs require the GMAT?
With respect to admission requirements, online MBA programs largely resemble on-campus programs. Some online business programs require that applicants take the GMAT, while others do not. Carefully research each school's requirements to find out whether or not you need to take the GMAT.
Are there any MBA specializations that do not require the GMAT?
Each school determines the admission requirements their applicants need to meet, but some MBA specializations require the GMAT. However, you may find slightly different admission processes and requirements for various MBA tracks within one university.
