First administered in 1954, the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is an exam that most business schools require for admission. Around the world, close to 7,000 management and business programs accept GMAT scores. Additionally, many scholarship programs ask MBA students to submit their GMAT scores for review.

In its current form, the GMAT comprises four sections. During a 30-minute Analytical Writing Assessment, students write an essay breaking down a provided argument. The integrated reasoning section consists of 12 questions that assess a candidate's ability to interpret graphically represented data. A verbal section tests reading comprehension, grammar, and critical reasoning, while the quantitative section evaluates quantitative problem-solving. Students take the GMAT via computer and may complete the test's sections in whichever order they choose.

You may be wondering: Can I get an MBA without a GMAT score? Though most of the top MBA programs require standardized test scores, many excellent business schools feature no GMAT requirement.

Why Are Schools Waiving or Not Requiring the GMAT?

While the GMAT adeptly assesses a student's basic skills and forecasts success in graduate study, it does not measure intangible qualities, such as leadership or teamwork ability. As a result, many business schools are eliminating their GMAT requirement or accepting GRE scores instead in the hopes of attracting a broader variety of promising applicants. Additionally, many schools recognize that advanced degrees and work experience provide strong evidence of the skills needed for success in business school. These days, schools that still insist on GMAT scores for admission generally do so as a way of gauging a student's commitment to earning a business degree while, at the same time, weeding out less serious candidates.

Offering alternatives to the GMAT benefits both schools and applicants by reducing hurdles that discourage prospective students from applying. For example, offering a GMAT waiver to students with demonstrated work experience benefits applicants who have been out of school for a few years, while schools gain a more diverse applicant pool of experienced professionals.

The Top 10 Schools Offering an Online MBA with No GMAT Requirement for 2020

A good score on the GMAT is never a bad thing when applying to an MBA program, but taking the exam is not for everyone. Some students may get stressed in high-pressure testing environments, or may not be great test takers. Students may also decide that they would rather not spend the money to prepare and sit for the exam.

These students who have decided that their time and effort are better spent elsewhere can still earn an MBA at many top-ranked universities without providing a GMAT score. In many cases, schools look to other indicators of success like GPA, career experience, and letters of recommendation. Our ranking of the top 10 online MBA programs with no GMAT requirement can help you find a school that is both competitive and flexible with its admission requirements.

Admission Requirements in Place of GMAT Scores

Future graduate students who choose an online MBA program with no GMAT expectation still need to meet other MBA admission requirements. For example, programs may evaluate applicants based on their prior work experience, their undergraduate academic performance, or letters of recommendation from professors.

Accreditation For Schools With No GMAT Requirements

Accreditation is one of the most important things to look for in an MBA online program with no GMAT requirement. Schools and programs need proper accreditation in order for students to qualify for licensing exams, transfer credits to another institution, or obtain tuition reimbursements and financial aid. Look for regional accreditation; this ensures that all aspects of an institution -- including faculty, departments, programs, and curricula -- have been vetted by one of seven regional accreditation agencies.

The two most widely recognized accreditation bodies for business schools are the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), and the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Both organizations are approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and examine programs for exceptional research and teaching outcomes. AACSB-accredited online MBA programs with no GMAT requirement are the best option for prospective students looking to strike a balance between convenience and academic rigor.

How to Choose a Quality Online MBA Program

Choosing an online MBA program can be a long and difficult process, since prospective students need to take into account an array of different factors. For instance, MBA programs vary in terms of cost, distance learning format, accreditation status, student resources, and location. Learners should also make sure that their chosen program offers courses and concentrations that fit their academic interests.

If you are wondering how to choose an online MBA, read on to learn more about some key characteristics to compare and contrast when researching schools.

Curriculum

The curriculum is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing among online MBA programs. While many business programs offer similar courses, some programs may have electives and core classes that fit better with your goals and interests.

Concentration Availability

Some of the best MBA programs offer students opportunities to pursue a concentration that prepares them for a specific career path. If you plan on pursuing a particular job or industry after graduation, consider prioritizing programs that offer the appropriate specialization for that field.

Program Format

Distance MBA programs follow various learning formats. For example, asynchronous programs typically permit students to work through courses independently, while synchronous programs require students to attend online classes at scheduled times. Additionally, some MBA programs expect students to travel to campus for in-person events, while others enable learners to complete the entire curriculum from a distance.

Affordability

Try to pick an online MBA with a tuition rate within your financial means. You can reduce out-of-pocket costs by applying for scholarships through your university or through other organizations. Additionally, keep in mind that public universities in your home state generally boast lower tuition rates than private institutions or out-of-state public universities.

Graduation Rate and Job Placement Rates

You can differentiate between business schools by researching their graduation and job placement rates. Graduation rate may indicate student satisfaction level in a program, while job placement figures show the degree to which a program prepares graduates to find a job.

Faculty

Browsing a university's faculty roster can tell you a bit more about the type of education you will receive from an MBA program. Consider faculty members' education level, along with their industry experience prior to teaching. Prioritize programs with faculty who have high levels of education and significant business experience.

Accreditation

Be sure to only apply to properly accredited universities and business programs. Institutional accreditation indicates that a university abides by prevailing academic standards. MBA accreditation from an organization such as the AACSB offers evidence that a program consistently provides a high quality business education.

No GMAT MBA FAQs

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?
The time it takes to prepare for the GMAT depends on factors such as your test-taking abilities and the time each day you can dedicate to studying outside of work and other obligations. You may want to spend three months or more preparing for the exam, depending on your schedule and goal score.
Are MBA programs that do not require the GMAT good?
Yes. Whether or not a program requires the GMAT typically does not reflect the program's quality. Plenty of top business schools do not require standardized tests and instead place extra emphasis on other parts of a student's application. Similarly, many excellent undergraduate programs no longer require the SAT or ACT.
What GPA should I have if I am not taking the GMAT?
Business schools often post minimum GPA requirements to their website, but you should always strive to get the best grades you can, since a high GPA will increase your chances of getting into any business program. Schools that waive the GMAT requirements for students with certain GPAs often require at least a 3.5.
Do online MBA programs require the GMAT?
With respect to admission requirements, online MBA programs largely resemble on-campus programs. Some online business programs require that applicants take the GMAT, while others do not. Carefully research each school's requirements to find out whether or not you need to take the GMAT.
Are there any MBA specializations that do not require the GMAT?
Each school determines the admission requirements their applicants need to meet, and there are no MBA specializations that never require the GMAT. However, you may find slightly different admission processes and requirements for various MBA tracks within one university.
